ビリー・ジョエルのあの曲を、黒っぽくカバーしたA1のギター・ソロがジャジーでかっちょいい。
レス・マッキャンといえば、『スイス・ムーブメント』でソウル・ジャズの金字塔を打ち立てた人として有名です。それを聴いていない私にとって、マッキャンといえばNHK朝の連続テレビ小説、じゃなかった、ロバータ・フラックやリチャード・グルーヴ・ホルムスを表舞台に送り出したタレント発掘人。名伯楽ですね。
ピアノやキーボードを弾きながら歌うダミ声に、何ともいえないソウルを感じてしまいます。
美声ではなく、ちょっといかがわしく、いやらしい声。聴衆を感動させる声というより、ベッドの上で腹のたるんだ女を恥ずかしい言葉で責め立て、羞恥心をあおるのに適した声です。
中古レコード屋で、ジャズ・フュージョンのコーナーに並べられてしまいがちなレス・マッキャン。しかし聴けばおわかりの通り、ジャンル分けするなら彼はソウルです。それもニュー・ソウル寄りの。
B級ダニー・ハサウェイと考えれば、ちょうどいいのかも。いやこういう表現はちょっと失礼ですかね。誰かと比べてもしゃーない。Compared to Whatってか。
